Frequently asked questions

Since 2009, Center Mass Permit Class has provided clear, patient instruction across Minnesota. From safety basics and legal responsibilities to live-fire range tests, here is everything you need to know before attending your session.

What do I need to bring to the permit class?

You must bring a firearm of your choice and 50 rounds of ammunition. Eye and ear protection are required for everyone on the range. If you do not have eye or ear protection, some can be provided for you.

What if I do not own a firearm or need to borrow one?

If you need to use a firearm, one can be provided for your qualification. You will just need to supply the specific ammunition required for that firearm.

What should I expect during the shooting qualification?

The live-fire qualification is conducted at distances of 15 and 21 feet. You will fire no more than 50 rounds. Our goal is to observe safe gun handling and marksmanship in a controlled, supportive environment.

What if I am nervous or brand new to shooting?

Safety is our number one priority. Our instructors are exceptionally patient with both brand-new shooters and experienced firearm owners. We routinely work with nervous students on the firing line to make sure everyone feels safe and confident.

How long is my Minnesota permit to carry valid?

A Minnesota permit to carry is valid for 5 years from the date of issuance. To keep your permit active without a lapse, you must attend a mandatory renewal course before your expiration date.

When can I take the renewal class and renew my permit?

Renewals are required every 5 years. You can take your renewal class up to 90 days before your permit expires, and you have a 30-day grace period to complete your renewal application with the sheriff after your permit expires.

What does the permit class curriculum cover?

We cover the legal responsibilities under the Minnesota Personal Protection Act, the laws surrounding the use of deadly force, safe carry methods, conflict avoidance, and safe firearm operation, followed by the range qualification.

How do I become a certified Minnesota carry instructor?

Center Mass Permit Class is certified with the MN BCA to train new instructors. To qualify, you should possess extensive firearm handling experience, a deep knowledge of firearm safety, and the patience and passion to teach students of all experience levels.
